Re:Go Green Night Activities
The activity that went over the best at our event was the Trash to Treasure Fashion Show. We held a workshop for interested kids during lunch times about 6 weeks before the event. We gave them ideas and guidelines for projects and they had plenty of time to work on their garment. We had some great entries!!! Dresses made from newspaper, a grooming apron (for horse grooming) from old blue jeans, accessories made from a variety of materials. the kids got to model their creations on stage in the gym during the event. they were so proud!!! Oh...my favorite was an outfit made out of an old shirt and accessorized with treats...made for and modeled by the 4th grade class guinea pig!

Vandergrift Elementary School in PA has also started a TerraCycle programs and the big recylers seem to be the home storage and chip bag programs. I just found out we now quilify for the candy wrapper program also. We are seeing big hits with the juice pouches-5000 is a long way to collect-but I know our students will succed!

We launched an eco-friendly initiative this year we call WOGGs--White Oaks Goes Green and supporters are known as FWOGGs (Friends of WOGGs). In the firs month of school we collected and turned in more than 1000 juice pouches to Terracycle, worth two cents each. We just started collected candy and cookie wrappers for them as well. Our sixth graders count plastic bags and other resin code 2 and 4 plastic recyclables to compete with other area schools for a recycled plastic bench from our sponsoring company, TREX. The kids are excited, the school benefits, and we're generating less waste.

We have an excellent recycling program for cell phones, ink cartridges, juice pouches, wrappers, yogurt containers, etc. We also have collection bins for bottles and cans and paper. We have saved money on waste removal costs. Our school was voted as having the most profitable school recycling program in NH!

Our school have an organic garden that the children are responsible for. We compost left overs form lunch and ask parents to send washed eggshells so that the children can grind them and mix them into the soil. Each child has a plant inside the classroom to encourage a love for nature and how to take care of nature. We are in the process of going totally digital with school administration and we only use cloth napkins and place mats. This is just a few of the things we do to go green.

Lizane, I'm curious, are you a public school or private? We got material donated last year and our first graders cut out cloth napkins from the material. We had planned to use them in the Cafeteria but couldn't because of health regulations. Something about the washing of them...How do you handle that?

Our school Green Team reviewed all of the school supply lists with the teachers and significantly reduced the lists, as well as came up with alternatives for certain supplies that were not so green.

What a great idea Becky. Curious to hear hear which supplies you offered alternatives to?

We are encouraging kids to pack waste-free lunches: cloth napkins, no plastic bags or throw-out untensils, etc.
