You'll need the following (makes approx. 24 mushrooms):
- 12 red apples (Macoun, Macintosh, Empire, Cortland)
- 24 large marshmallows
- Toothpicks or skewers trimmed to appropriate length
Avoiding the core of the apple, slice each side of the apple, leaving you with two dome-shaped sides. These will be the tops to your mushrooms.
Stick two toothpicks into the inside middle of each apple dome, and carefully insert into the marshmallow. The marshmallow will act as the mushroom "stem".
You can either lay the mushrooms on their side to display, or, if using long enough skewers, you can poke them into a cardboard box so that the mushrooms are able to stand upright.
