Question: PTO and Disaster Relief

Our treasurer received an e-mail from the NCPTA saying PTA's could not donate to the disaster relief in Haiti. We switched to a PTO this year and are wondering if we could donate a very modest amount?

The NCPTA is probably concerned about an IRS rule that says 501c3 groups need to spend their money consistent with their mission. If you donate $50 to disaster relief, it's not likely to raise any red flags. If you donate $5,000, that might be another story. If you can tie it into a project that raises awareness among your students about the need to help others, you're on solid footing and it's a win-win all around.
