Question: 501(c)3 status?

Our PTO has always used our school's EIN. We now have a new principal, and she's questioning whether the PTO can actually use the number. Can we or do we need to apply for our own number?

You can technically continue to operate using that number and in that case your group is essentially part of the school. It is sounding like the principal may not be too keen on that idea though. So you can easily get your own EIN. You need a Form SS-4 from the IRS, which you can get online. The whole process should only take a few minutes. Good luck!
