No nominations for Leadership positions

12 years 1 week ago #160939 by Rose H
Hi Stephanie Lilly,

I gotta say, that is just phenomenal! Love the part about standing outside! What we've found, though, is if you do reach out to people directly, rather than through an email blast or a flyer, you can have lots of success. Love the idea of reaching out to grandparents, too. Sometimes, leaders aren't comfortable with trying to sell the group or the job. Do you have any tips you'd like to share on what you actually said to folks?

Thanks,
Rose C.

Hello :)

I have experienced the same problems you have and discovered that it does get better- my entire team is 9. The same 9 over and over again but we ended up raising over $9,000 dollars. I started with a list of teachers and begain to visit each and everyone of them. Letting them know that I had a secretary position open. When I failed there I began talking to parents to see if there were any grandparents in the need of volunteering. I would stand outside where children were being picked up and hand out fliers for volunteers and board positions...
The principal started to allow me to attend the staff meeting and would give me 15 minuts of their time. Eventually - success, though our monthly meeting are still 9 people, we are thriving.
If you need any assistance, please email me..

I have been the president or VP for 4 years....My entire board is stepping down. No one wants to move up or stay on...I talked a new Mom into being the President for next year...We have been talking to several other Moms, about taking on the other positions...It is very hard to get parents involved...they see it as a lot of work and or to political to deal with the principal...So, all we can do is hope for the best and give the new board all the help they need to get thru next year.

This is happening to us this year as well--- I have been President for 4 years and on the board for 6 years.... thought it might be a good time to take a year off-- or at least step down from the President position-- I have found someone to take on the President's spot from our current board -- but now every other position will be open as we do not have interested parents wanting to stay on board to step into a position. I hate to leave the new President in this position-- I am trying to get more parents interested but not sure if this will happen.... going to be a rough year next year....

Melanie803, This sounds like a great idea! Really interested to see how you make out with this approach.

We are in a similar position - the same folks have been running things for several years now and are stepping down/moving on. Our Board has decided to facilitate some change and, hopefully, interest, by revamping our titles and duties.

We have created "new" job descriptions, renamed several positions, added some positions, and become as specific as we can (considering these descriptions are part of our bylaws, we don't want to have to change them every few months!).

We have specified that the Board Members in charge of Volunteers (2) and the Board Member in charge of Fundraising is NOT to be the chair of the event - they are to be on the committee so info can be passed back and forth between Board and Committee (especially for reimbursement ease). We created a "Vice Treasurer" to be mentored by the current treasurer for a year before stepping into the position. We already have succession from VP to Pres to Past Pres for continuity and mentoring.

Our By-Law proposals are just out a couple weeks, and we have another month till the vote to approve and elections, so we'll see if this approach is helpful - I'll keep you all posted!
