Appoint or elect new officer?

12 years 9 months ago #158009 by mdaiglern
Our group's secretary has resigned from the school two weeks ago. She was elected in May to serve for the 2011 - 2012 school year. Our bylaws do state that officers can appoint a new officer.

We have one parent who wants this position and demands we have an election. We thought to appoint another parent who is interested in the position and was at most of the school functions and attended most meeting. I would say she has been an active member.

The mom that is demanding an election has not been an active member. She will show up every-now-and-then and cause tension in the group making it very difficult to function. Essentially, she has pushed many families away due to this. She ran for treasurer during the last election and lost 3 - 14.

Would you go ahead and do as the bylaws read, to appoint a new official or hold an election? My whole being is saying to follow the bylaws, but to minimize the conflict and tension, I feel like we should have an election.

Help! What would you do?
