filling officer spots

We had nominations Monday night and we have two canidates for President and One for VP but NO ONE wants to run for secretary or tresurer. We have write-ins on our ballots and nominations are open for a few more days. Our by-laws state that the VP will assume either Sec or Tres office if they can't be filled. My concern is the Tres has yet to say anything good about her position so no one wants to do it. Our elections will be in May and I was wondering when we start school again in the fall, and someone wants to serve in one (hopefully one) of the offices open do we need to have a special election? Can that person be appointed? Our by-laws say only that the VP fills in and I can't find anything in the Robert's Rules. Right now I am the Secretary but have served my 2yr term and am running for Pres so I do have a valid concern. I have talked to EVERYONE I can think of with no luck. Any thoughts?

If your Bylaws don't speak to the issue, and someone (or 2) volunteer next fall, welcome them with open arms and get on with business. If anyone complains about their appointments, ask the complainer to step up to fill the vacant positions. That will silence the critics!

P.S. If no one wants the treasurer's job, it may be that the job expectations and procedures havent' been documented. Do you have a budget? If not, the current treasurer might feel frustrated because of pressures about how people want the money to be spent. If your PTO doesn't have a budget, take the lead to create one for the new year. Maybe that kind of proactivity will be enough to entice a candidate. Good Luck!

P.P.S. We're having the opposite problem: two many candidates per office so we will have to vote between people. It's getting ugly as members "choose up sides".

I had the same problem last year, but with the secretary position. I finally talked 2 of my friends into sharing the position and we held a vote at the September meeting. No one was going to object at that point.

Critter- Thank you! We do have a budget that is set at the begining of the year and do stick to it better than my household budget!
She has been pushed by the Pres so much to find something wrong that it's finally taken it's toll! You and know who will be the first to complain about an appointed board member!- the former President and her sidekick the former Tres! I'm ready for that! (I think)

Hi Critter,
How do you get too many people to run for office? We have had nominations open for over a month and so far no one has agreed to run for office. Do you have any ideas you can pass onto me. Talking to friends has no helped. Neither has talking to strangers. I will take any ideas anyone else has, too.

The treasurers job is one of the busiest jobs with all the check writing, deposits and book keeping, the early morning calls from teachers etc that forgot to ask for a check etc etc. Because of this it is a hard job to fill. A couple years ago the then President announced that the books would be sealed and PTO shut down if someone did not come forward, someone did but I think we may have the same problem this year, it is the one position that we do not have anyone for yet.
