Letter to Kindergarten Parents

These were great letter ideas. Thanks! Anyone do a Boo-Hoo Breakfast for kindergarten parents the first day of school? I'm looking for some ideas and a great poem for the invitation. Thanks - Tanya

Wow! I love that letter Jim!
I wish I had thought about that for ours! We already held our K Orientation, and out of 30 parents, only 3 talked to us, and 1 of those 3 actually seemed interested!
We go through this every year... no one is interested when we send out the first letter. Normally we get the current PTO members signing up... then we send out a Despiration letter! We then get maybe a dozen responses! Normally none for the Exec board... but it is something! I have been a member of our school PTO for 6 years... this will be my 7th!

Now I will tell you, some new parents even if they did PTO at a different school are still seen as NEW and not treated like they have a clue! Give them a chance! As we have lived here for 1.5 years, and they still act like I know little to nothing! Luckily I was put up for Pres, by this years Pres! She has faith in me, and has heard my ideas!

Just remember like Jim's letter says... WE ARE A FRIENDLY PTO, WE LOVE NEW IDEAS, NEW INPUT!!! Those words are VERY welcoming to new parents!

Here's what I comprised last summer. It incorporated the example listed on the PTOtoday website, but also references some specifics to my group's activities and school...

Hope this helps.

PARENT-TEACHER ORGANIZATION

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome each of you and your families to the _______________________ Elementary School. As the PTO President it is my responsibility to talk with you about getting involved in the school. But first, since this may be the first time at _______________ for many of you, I think that it is important to explain what the ____________________ PTO is all about.

It is important to note that come September you will automatically become a member of the _________________ PTO. In fact, all parents or guardians of children attending __________________, as well as each member of the professional staff, are members of the Parent Teacher Organization and are encouraged to participate in it’s activities.

The active members of the committee consist of both parents and teachers who volunteer their time to enhance the educational experience of every child in our school. We are an independent organization and we do not belong to any state or national affiliation, or support any political platforms. Because we are a PTO we keep all of the funds that we raise for our school rather than sending money for state and/or national dues or fees.

The _______________________ Elementary School PTO's mission is to promote open communication and understanding between parents and staff of the __________________ Elementary School. Our dedication is to enhance and maximize the education of every child while aiding them in achieving their highest potential.

To meet this extremely important goal the organization actively fundraises through various ongoing and event specific programs and activities. These funds enable us to offer many varied programs and projects, all for the betterment of the students' education. Some examples include the Reading Incentive Program, Enrichment Programs - including Field Trips and in-school invited events, Field Day, the new "Playground of Dreams" and many, many more. But as you can imagine, to meet all of the goals that we have, we need ACTIVE participation.

This is where you can come in...

Now I truly understand how daunting volunteering can be. Questions such as:

"How much time are we talking about here?", "Will I be required to take on event or committee responsibilities?", or something as simple as, "What exactly is required of me?", are all very normal.

And I am here to assure you that as long as I am the President I will never force anyone to dedicate more time than they are willing, or to be coerced into any undertaking that they are not comfortable with. ANY time that ANY individual is willing to offer is more valuable than I can relate! To give you an example of how important the committee feels your valuable participation is, we have gone out of our way to prevent the need of dues, such as the majority of other PTA and PTO groups require. We also understand that in today's world it is increasingly more difficult to be able to find time to give, even such as one to two hours once a month, which is how often the committee meets. This year we've been able to start offering school age childcare services during the meetings by working with the outreach program at ________________ College, and we hope to maintain this affiliation next year.

The funny thing is that most people think of parent groups as being all about bake sales. Or they think of power-tripping moms ruling their domain, like Desperate Housewives or Harper Valley PTA. Well, that's good TV, but it's not us.

We are about men and women working together toward a common goal. That goal simply stated is creating a better school and a better educational experience for our children. We strive to create an atmosphere where both teachers and administrators can do their best work - and so can our children.

There's so much more that can be accomplished, and we need your help. Despite what you see on TV, our parent group is not a bunch of crazed, power-hungry moms (or dads). We are moms and dads, uncles and aunts, grandparents, and friends who care about children and education. We are welcoming and friendly. We are your neighbors, and we share many of the same concerns that you do.

But that's not the only reason to become active. There have been more than 500 independent studies about parent involvement. The results are startling. When parents get involved in their children's education, grades go up, test scores go up, children become more likely to pass and to attend better schools after high school, they have fewer discipline problems, and they're less likely to use drugs and alcohol.

Volunteering doesn't mean a huge time commitment. And whatever your time schedule and interests we have need of you. We have tasks that can be performed in the evenings, during the day, or that don't even involve coming to the school at all.

Won't you join us? I invite you to take a look at the _________________ PTO website to get a feel for all that we do, at http://______________________________/ . Then come September just come on out to a PTO meeting or give me a call or send me an e-mail. Becoming active is really easy - and it really makes a difference!

Here is an edited copy of our welcome letter and welcome brochure...no "me toos"...please use this if you need some help...d

Hello – and welcome to _____,
We are so happy to have you as a part of this very talented and creative group of families at __________. It is our absolute goal to ensure that our children have the best start to their learning experience. We know that with your help, the possibilities for this group are endless.

Our PTO was formed in ______. At the core of our organization we have a heart and spirit that is unsurpassed. Just having your family’s name on our roles gives us the moral support we need, and your contributions of time and energy keep the spirit growing and showing.

Take a look at our programs. They will show you what we’ve done to date as well as where your particular help is needed. If you have an idea that you don’t see but think would be fun please let us know. I promise you we take all suggestions very seriously.

I also want to personally thank you. I know that some folks shy away from joining the PTO out of fear of constant requirements to volunteer. While we of course appreciate any type of support you can provide and realize that your time is very valuable, we also know that in some cases it just is not possible. Our board is comprised of working families as well as stay at home parents so we maintain an even perspective on what impact we have on you. If you cannot volunteer, just mark that on your membership form and we WILL NOT call you.

Finally-I truly believe this is the best school in our county. I cannot say often enough how lucky we are to have this place of learning, this group of teachers and staff, and all of these wonderfully supportive families to form our learning community. Get set for a great year and remember that we are here to leave our prints on tomorrow….so let’s get started.
This was a part of our brochure to parents:

Welcome to MBES…
We are so excited about our team here at __________. Our school is an incredible place of learning, laughing, dreaming and achieving for our children. With your help, we will maintain that spirit, as our second year of classes begin. Our PTO was formed by energetic, dedicated parents and caregivers, looking to enhance the work of the teachers and staff at MBES by providing them and our children with manpower, supplies, special events and support when and where it is needed. In this pamphlet, you’ll find a list of some of the events we sponsored during the school year. We are proud of what we’ve done look very forward to our future.
You can reach us at any time via the PTO email at __________________. Also, if you have any questions, you can call the school and they will put you in touch with one of our board members. We are here to answer your questions and help as you transition your children into our school.
At __________…our volunteers and PTO make a huge difference. We hope you will join us in that mission

President
