Parent Volunteers for Reading in the classrooms

18 years 9 months ago #73268 by UBEBreck
Stephanie: Our elementary school actually had more success reaching out to the local community to look for volunteers (our parents already do so much for our school).

We posted the signup at the libraries, senior citizen center, local colleges and in the free Community Notes section of our local newspaper.

The people that signed up had to contact the principal, not sure if there were any issues with background checks, etc. We had MORE than enough people last spring to accomodate volunteers for K-5.

Good luck!

Hello all! My child's first year of school was last year and I was asked to take over our READERS IN ACTION program.
We basically ask our parents to volunteer their time to read to a classroom. It is really fun and the children love having their mom or dad in their classroom reading a favorite book to his or her classmates!

My problem is, I had trouble getting parents to volunteer their time to read to the children.

I would like to set something up for meet the teacher this year to try to get parents excited and gernerate some volunteers. Does anyone have any ideas?

Stephanie
