Who votes at a PTA meeting?

At our PTO, parents and teachers can vote. There is no dues to be collected, all you need to do is have a child at the school or teacher there to be a member. Many times the teachers that attend do not vote either way, many votes have to do with money and giving it to the teachers so they don't participate.

Hi jackrey -

There's no definitive answer for your school, except what your bylaws say. If your bylaws have only parents as member, then that's the rule for now. That said, bylaws can be changed -- and your group might think about the benefits of working together with the faculty.

If they pay dues they are entitled to 1 vote---PTA & PTO's equal Parent Teacher Association or Parent Teacher Organization. Sounds like their is a barrier between teachers and parents which can cause so many problems--i would work on trying to break down that barrier..

Hello everyone,

Just a simple question! In your schools, are teachers voting members of your PTO's. If so, does conflict ever raise its ugly head, and how is that handled.

Currently, our by-laws include only parents as voting members, and teachers feel that they should be included in the voting membership. Our concern is that often they have a different position than parents. As an example selling candy at school during lunch for fund raising.

Your insights into this situation will be invaluable.

Thanks,
jackrey
