Conflict of Interest?

Some organizations have policies about not doing business with the immediate family of an officer. Personally, I'm not in favor of that because it closes the door to some good opportunities. Like the others have mentioned, the key is in full disclosure and in you not being involved in any decision making regarding his company.

It sounds like your organization doesn't have this type of policy, but I'd think about the future. If someone objected - would your husband strike the school off his client list or would you resign?

I'd be very clear (and perhaps even have it reflected in the minutes) during the nomination process that you are willing to take on the role of treasurer and would abstain from any discussions that might involve your husband's company, but that you are not prepared to jeopardize his chance to do business with the school/PTO (if that's how you feel).

If there are any financial transactions with your husband's company while you are treasurer, make sure you have lots of documentation - or maybe that you get alternates to sign that check or receive the funds.

Beignets is absolutely right - it's appearances as much - if not more - than reality that you need to plan for.

its not a conflict of interest if you stay out of the voting for fundraiser choices...but then, appearances are what counts.

That shouldnt keep you from taking a boiard position

As for fundraising - I'd just abstain from votes that regard your husbands company- you could still comment on said activities, discussion just abstain to vote to keep that conflict of interest at bay

Hello, I was nominated for PTO Treasurer, but have a question. My husband does fundraising for a living, and while our school has used some of his products for fundraising, if I am on the board, will that be a conflict of interest?

While I would love to support my husband and our family by having all of the fundraisers come from his company, I realize that it will not always be that way. I understand that, but I may have a hard time fully supporting a different fundraiser. I would, of course, still manage the tasks needed.

Should I accecpt the nomination, or just be content to volunteer on a committee? (All of the board members are aware of my husband's employment, and there is nothing in the by-laws regarding this) Thanks!
