Spring Carnival Help

For those that have done a spring carnival...
I am currently planning ours now (first ever) and have sent out many donation letter requests to corporations. Some have been fulfilled, others with no answer, and others have said that it's too soon (for April).
I think I might be learning as I go that maybe I shouldn't start soliciting donations until 3-4 months out? I don't want to be the last one on the list & get left out, but I also don't want to be so early that they blow me off.
Any input?

We had two things that were very successful at our carnival this year. We sold wristbands for $8 prepay and $10 at the door. With the wristband, you didn't have to buy tickets for each game. There were a few games that we charged to play and those tickets were extra. We also had several teachers and the principal volunteer to let people throw a plate of whip cream at them. They had to pay at least $1 to throw. If you do this, I suggest shower caps and rain ponchos for the victims. We actually made money on our carnival this year thanks largely to lots of donations. Ask any business you can think of to donate something and you will be surprised at how many say yes.

I would love to also have the information. We have never had a carnival at our school. The past principal did not want to, but, we have a new principal this year and would love to present her with an organized plan of the carnival we would like to have this year.

Thanks bunches
