no president or treasurer

Hi anglaw,

One way to look at this: Take the principal at his word. He said he could find people to step in. You've done your part and you are still concerned, which shows you care about the group and don't want to see it dissolve. But, it isn't your job to make this right.

Feel good about the work you did on behalf of the middle school. Make sure your name is off the bank account and, it is OK to move on.

Just let go. You have done your part. Principal understands what needs to be done. What happens happens. Not your problem anymore. I understand the frustration of being stuck. Don't worry about the tax exempt issue, the new board can figure it out. If you should happen to receive any calls/contact at this point regarding the PTA, simply state that you are no longer affiliated with the school PTA and direct them to the Principal.
We were threatened with having our unit dissolved, I told the regional director "Great! Get started now" and click. Quite alright with me. Less stress.
Good luck!

no president or treasurer was created by anglaw
I am part of a middle school PTO. We have been unsuccessful in recruiting any replacements for the president or treasurer positions. I stepped up to be interim treasurer in November after it was discovered our previous treasurer and president were stealing from the group (this is an entirely different long story).

I was clear, as was the person who stepped into the role of president that we would not continue in these positions after the end of this year. I have decided to concentrate my efforts at the high school as this is my last year in the school. Our fiscal year ends June 30 and the president and myself want our names off the account after that date. According to our bylaws, if we do not have these positions filled the group dissolves. The principal says he will be able to find people to fill these postions BUT we will not be able to hold elections before August.

I will not continue in this position, period. I want to enforce our bylaws. The principal is refusing to discuss this. We would lose our sales tax exemption but we are covered under our school district's support 501(c)(3) umbrella so the group would simply have to reestablish officers and adopt bylaws to rejoin. This has happened at one other school in our district and in talking with them, it was not difficult to restart. In fact they feel it invigorated the group since they understand what it means to lose control of the money (all monies would revert to the district as prescribed in bylaws)

Sorry this became so long. Anyone have experience with this?
