MISSING BOARD MEMBERS FOR NEXT YEAR!

10 years 11 months ago #163735 by Rose H
Hi MsSevilla,

Has anything improved since your last post? If it helps at all, we've had a few very similar posts recently. It isn't uncommon for groups to find themselves in this predicament. Do you currently have a full board? If there is literally no one else willing to take on these jobs, will any of the current board members stay on? There is probably a provision in the bylaws for this (even if they are going beyond their term limits). Or, would even just a few stay on? You don't have to have every board position filled to move forward. As long as you have the basic jobs covered -- in particular, a treasurer handling the finances and someone handling the president's functions of setting the agenda, running meetings, connecting with the principal and making sure committee chairs have what they need -- you are still a functioning PTO.

In the meantime, one thing for your group to consider: Start looking around now for folks who might be interested in stepping up next year. It seems the groups that are most successful view executive board member recruitment as a continuous process. It's worth a shot.

Here are a few articles that might help for longer term:

Good luck! We feel your pain and we are here to offer more resources as you need them.

Help! We are in the midst of collecting nominations for next year's PTO board and everyone who was nominated for president and VP has declined! There is nothing in our bylaws that gives direction as to what to do next. We've gone to our principal and received no advice there either. Not a peep.

Has anyone run into this before? What was your solution? Has anyone NOT had a PTO board due to poor participation? We have nominees for our other offices, could the board function without a president/VP?

It seems the only concern is whether there's someone to run the PTO's largest fundraiser in the spring (there seems to be) and perhaps someone authorized to write checks from the PTO account to fund school activities for the kids.

School gets out in a few weeks and we're at a loss. The new officers are to start their terms -- and work -- July 1.

Thanks!
