Get Movin' Night

We had our Get Movin Night last Thursday, March 20th, 2008. It was held in our gym and our turn-out was FANTASTIC!! The relays , dancing and limbo were a HIT!!!! We had a nutrionist that gave 10 minute seminars, healthy snacks such as a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables , and cheese sticks provided by our cafeteria and we provided the bottled water. We had our local YMCA participate and we ALL had a GREAT time! I would encourage everyone to try this . The parents also participated and our Principal enjoyed doing the limbo with our students. I had more parents that asked to join P.T.O. and did! We made this a free event so we would have more of a turn-out. I can't say enough about it!! I would like to thank the person who had these terrific ideas, because we need to show our kids healthier ways to snack and more impotantly to keep moving. They were getting excercise and thoght they were only having fun. Kudos to you! And Thank You Very Much!!

How wonderful and thanks for sharing. So often we hear only the front end: the questions and problems and possible ideas. It's great when someone comes back after the fact to tell us what happened. Congratulations!

We had our Get Movin' Night during the National turn off your TV week. As this was our first year doing this, we went on the small scale to get our feet wet with it. We set the gym up with an obstacle course (2 lanes so you could race a friend), basket ball drills, hockey shooting, Hula Hooping, Jump Roping (we taped jump roping songs on the wall), Red Light Green Light, etc... It was a success. The kids really enjoyed, and so did the parents. The obstacle course was the hit of the night; kids raced their friends and their parents! Parents even raced their spouses - it was so much fun!

We actually had Dad's sign up to help with this event and they were fantastic! This is a perfect event to include the Dads. We had our Bagels with Dad breakfast a few weeks before so it was a perfect opportunity to elicit volunteers.

Next year, we plan on holding this again and going even bigger with inviting others from the community to share information. We plan on purchasing water bottles with our school name and Get Movin' Night on it so that the kids have something from the evening.

The packet was very helpful; we just lacked volunteers because April was a busy month with sports. We plan on moving our night to a winter activity.
