If your parent group uses the eScrip electronic scrip program, let your parents know that giant grocery story chain Safeway is no longer participating in it.

 

The change, which was effective as of Aug. 1, came after many school parent groups had created budgets that counted on income from electronic scrip. According to Safeway spokesman Keith Turner, many schools will continue to receive quarterly eScrip disbursements in the 2015-16 school year.

 

Since joining eScrip in 1999, Safeway has given more than $300 million to schools in the 19 states in which it operates. This change also affects other grocery chains operated by Safeway, including Vons, Pavilions, and Carrs.

 

Safeway will continue to support schools in its local communities in other ways, according to an email the company sent to eScrip participants. Beginning July 2016, Safeway will offer schools grants through its foundation.
