Should PTO's sponsor Boy Scout troops?

19 years 1 week ago #101416 by lasse143
I have a question to Momof2Gals.

You said that your PTO is the Charter Organization for your local Cub Scouts. I have a few questions for you if you don't mind:

1. Have you had any problems because you are the charter organization?

2. Do you give them a monitary donation each year? If so, can I ask how much? If not, why?

3. If you do give a donation, do you have any parents who object?

4. Have you thought about not being the Charter Organization due to so many issues lately surrounding their organization?

5. Are you involved with the day to day operations of your local CS group?

I really would like some information from other PTOs who are Charter Organizations so I can share this information when we meet next week.

thanks!

My point was simply that most Girl Scout troops are not looking for sponsors and are not looking to organizations to hand them large sums of money.
The GS council in our county would never support anything like that.

Are some...sure and obviously you have some that are sponsored. This subject rears its head occasionally and and the cases I have seen it is always a boy scout troop looking for sponsorship & or money.

Sponsorship also means different things to different people. Is sponsorhship someone giving you a place to meet or someone giving you $1000 because you want it for something.

I agree with your point that no organization is flawless. Boy Scouts in general just have many more problems due to the way they are structured.

We are completely off the subject now...but again the point of my post was just to say that this issue is definately more of a boy scout problem.

I also agree with your point on an organization that has no religous focus being a good idea.

Yes I realize they are 2 separate org's.
Not sure what the point of your post is, though.(not trying to be inflamitory, just inquisitive)

Have been involved in both for over 20yrs (Yes, BSA does have some problems) who doesn't?

I was responding to the questions above, to the best of my knowledge. Our school sponsors our girl scouts and brownies (only speaking from what I know)

I'd give anyone my shirt (sorry dont have any $$)to find an organization (non-religious) that teaches better principles, and standards to live by than the Boy and Girl Scouts do (many children and teens could use them plus a swift kick in the behind)

Just my opinion (feel free to disagree, after all this is the greatest place on earth)

This is not true of the Girl Scouts. Not where I live and not according to some other posters on this board. They are 2 seperate organizations who have nothing to do with each other.

I know people involved in Boy Scouts in our town. They tell me the entire organization is a mess. They are run very differently then girl scouts and they should probably take a look at how Girl Scouts are run and straighten themselves out.

Replied by <nonmember> on topic RE: Should PTO's sponsor Boy Scout troops?
I certainly wouldn't want Boy Scouts to have to use my homeowners or PTO/PTA insurance company if there was an accident or incident that needed insurance coverage. That is the whole problem with chartering. They don't have enough coverage of their own thru BSoA so they tag along on the chartering org. Even AIM won't cover them on a PTO's policy.

Most Scout Troops are looking for sponsors (either Boy or Girl) because the AFLCIO, ACLU and the other suposed AMERICAN LiBERTIES groups (whom have seemed to forgot that its Freedom to Practice Religion and such NOT Freedom from Religion and such) have been filing frivolous lawsuit for mtg places, choosing of leaders, pledge, scout oath.

Its a hot topic here in California and the 9th Circuit Court (WesternUS).

They're looking for the best ways to just let them teach young boys and girls the best way to be (trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful and thrify, brave, clean and reverent)

I neither approve or disapprove of Parent groups sponsoring them, but I've seen worse things sponsored by Churches,Parent Groups,Teachers, Schools and Parents...
