Helping Parent Leaders Make Schools Great

Boo Hoo Breakfast

August 21st, 2008 by tsullivan

OK, this PTA creatively calls it the “Kindergarten Cry” but I still love the name “Boo Hoo Breakfast” for an event to welcome/support the new parents at your school, who are letting go of their babies for the first time. Fun way to make that first connection and make a great first impression.

Reminds me — there a whole bunch of good “Boo Hoo Breakfast” docs in our File Exchange. Have you seen the File Exchange yet? It’s my favorite new PTO tool of 2008 (though I am a bit biased).

I love the file exchange— you can get some great ideas there, plus a good start on a new flier for an event that you already do. And I love the Boo Hoo/Yee Haw Breakfast idea– we will be doing this one this year for the 1st time. I think this is a great way for new parents at our school to meet in a non-threatening atmosphere– since all the parents there are going through the same thing– and this includes parents whether they are happy or sad that their little one is off to school and growing. A great way to start the school year off, a great 1st impression of the PTO- caring about it’s new parents enough to put this event on just for them.
A know there will be a few tears during this event— show off those box tops on the kleenex boxs– a love to cross promote!!!

On the first day of school, we have “Cryin’, Lovin’ & Leavin’” for our parents who are having trouble leaving their little ones for the first time. Our PTA puts out milk, juice, donuts and tissues for any parents who need some company.

We are planning our first one of these for Kindergarten parents as well as new families, to be held at a local coffee shop. We plan to call it Boo Hoo/Woo Hoo!

Our PTO has a “No Time for Tears” breakfast where we welcome our PreK, Kindergarten and new families with coffee, tea, and danish. We also have a bank of computers ready for our parents to complete the online registration for volunteering and let them know of all of our upcoming events. We hold the breakfast in the same room where all of the last minute registrations are taking place so that parents can partake while they are awaiting help with registering their children!

We held our first boo hoo/ yee haw breakfast and lunch (am and pm kindergarten) on the first day of school. We included our new Welcome Wagon program in the mix. This is for new families to the district to get to know their school, community and of course the pto! We held it in the library which was perfect with for the younger siblings that tagged along with the parents. A lot of play dates were set up at the event as well :) The turnout was great and the parents all seem eager to be a part of the pto team. I highly recommend the kindergarten parent event, whatever you wish to call it.

Our “TEARS amd CHEERS” breakfast was a great success! We hope to make it a yearly tradition!

We had our first boo-hoo/yahoo! reception this year on the first day of school and invited all families. We have a buddy family program as well so that was a great opportunity for people to connect and meet all the new folks. We just did donuts and coffee, but we had fun and used small tissues and party horns on the table as centerpieces. We also put infomation about our Parent’s group and the overview list of activities out on tables for take-aways. Great turnout and everyone had a fun time!
