80's themed family night

18 years 9 months ago #119147 by Michelle B
I am proud to say, I never owned a pair of parachute pants. Neon- yes but never any parachute pants. :D
Urban cowboy- Oh yes but I was still a bit young (Class of 1990-Represent!!) so we were just pleased we got to see the movie. The way he pushed his hat up- You know Travolta is definately a part of the 80's. If we go back to pre high school for me, how about The Shining (my friends used to yell Shelly Duvall and I'd freak out) or rainbow suspenders (mork and mindy) Roller skating was IT! Have you heard that song by Mark Wills- sounds like a lot of us fit that song here!

Member's only jackets!!! Ew! I'm happy to say I never had one of those either. Or leather pants with zippers everywhere, or I'm going into 80's overload but it is fun- SEE this is why we need our social section back. All this from an 80's themed night!!

One last thing- for those ex punks out there- studded bracelets, and chain necklaces with locks on them...and my prized possession in high school- my levi jeans jacket with writing ALL over it...

I don't know if this hit the rest of the country, but in the early 80's, Texas was also into "Urban Cowboy" stuff. Country-western clubs/bars popped up everywhere, many with mechanical bulls. Oversized belt buckles, snake-skin cowboy boots and often cheesy cowboy hats with feathers and such were popular. Girls wore hats and spaghetti-strap tank tops like "Sissy" wore in the movie. Of course, REAL cowboys/cowgirls were just laughing at all the wannabes and their goofy attire. And, don't forget the influence of J.R. and "Dallas"!

Ptoyeah- that was called "pegging" your pants! LOL! Neon, don't forget neon clothing, leg warmers, oversized men's sport coats with white shirts and a broach at the collar... I'm most definately a child of the 80's...sigh...

We haven't done this but my friend's daughter had an 80's dance at her middle school. She borrowed some of my old clothes and shoes (I never throw stuff out it seems and she never gave them back!!!) Oh, lace. Techno pop (all synth, all the time- Flock of Seagulls, the Cure, Depeche Mode, Front 242, or Van Halen, ACDC, Bon Jovi for the metal heads and Run DMC, DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince for your Preppies! Oh and preppies, flip those pink polo collars up.

I could give you so much more but you get the idea (I fear I've given my age away again though...)

:D

Oh the 80's. Just think big. Big plastic jewelry, BIG hair, big shoulder pads, stretch pants, long shirts with big belts, blue and black eye liner, perms, don't forget to tight roll your pants at the ankle and wear big socks. Oh the memories!
