PTOs and Changing Food Rules

Not so long ago, food at our school events was basically a free-for-all. Great (if sugary) fun for the kids, but over time, the rules have changed.

In general, the changes mean that snacks or fundraising food items sold before or during school must meet certain specific nutritional standards. Our new feature, “New Snack Rules: How Are PTOs Coping?” spells out what the changes mean, and how they’re affecting groups like yours. 

One thing I really liked was that most schools and groups seem willing and able to adapt to making some healthier choices. One parent group was inspired to start serving fruit and yogurt instead of doughnuts at its meetings, and another has cupcakes instead of whole cakes at its carnival musical cakes activity. These are a few examples of ways your school could fairly easily change things up and be healthier.
