We had an Author Visit this last monday. This year we had James Howe, author of Bunnicula and the Pinky and Rex series, among others. He is amazing! We always work through the childrens book store in our area. We sell books ahead at a discount and the author signs them. Last year we had James (oops, can't find his name) , and the year before we had Robert San Souci, who's also wonderful. I believe James Howe was $2100 plus expenses and he is there all day.
Our HSA provides $3500 towards enhancement activities, and the school board provides an additional $3500. Our enhancement committee (that's a tale for a whole other email) schedules all the assemblies for the year using those funds. Hope this helps...

I am an 8th grade language arts teacher and I have used Studentales books for the past two years. This company sends a kit with everything needed but crayons or markers to write and illustrate a book. You send the completed kit back to them and they return it in about 3 weeks hardbound. It is a very cool project. The cost is $1.95 per student and each kid gets a copy of their book. If you need more info let me know!

This is sort of related to the subject!

There are kits you can buy with paper, markers, including a postage-paid envelope. Your child draws pictures, writes a story, you send it in and the company makes it into a hardcover book with the artwork and the words all in typeface. It's a great keepsake, and I'm looking into it as a teacher gift from the class. ILLUSTORY is the name of this particular company, and I'm going to find out if they do fundraiser-type stuff. Kit cost under $20 from one of those educational stores, I imagine wholesale they're cheaper.

Britney, go to the Society of Children's Bookwriters and Illustrators website and find the local chapter for your area. This will give you a listing of authors who are close to you. You can also try the Author Illustrator Source website. I'm an AZ author that does school visits, and I can tell you that a local author will end up costing you less because they won't require travel expenses.
