Kim,
Count it as a blessing in disguise and welcome to this website.

Hi Kim,

Not sure about what's happening with your situation but the council doesn't have regulations (many states don't even require you to be part of the council) and does not have the authority to shut you down and you really need to contact your state office. I, as a Council President, DO NOT have the authority to do that. If you weren't abiding by the rules, (and it would have to be something rather drastic like embezzelment or non-payment of any dues, (even then we haven't done much with that) you would hear from state but here in Nevada, it only says you need 10 members to charter, you don't need a minimum to keep going. I really think that it is more likely that someone on your council is taking more liberties than they are authorized to. We value all our units from the ones with 3 members to the ones with 300. Please go over their heads before you allow one misinformed, possible God-complex person, freak you out! I also think that it might be time for you to rally the other units and let the State know that your council isn't doing their job. We are all volunteers and just like those at the school, you get some that truly work and others who just like the title attached to their names. (Or to give credit, some that bite off more than they can chew and end up doing nothing)
If you want, I can help you too if you need it. I'm a little less swamped now that the new year is in full swing.

I am glad Tim said it and not me

There are a lot worse things that can happen than this and in the end it may become a blessing. I am often asked why I am so down on PTA, well one only needs read Kim's post

Kom - a PTO is only as far away as all of you are willing to make it.

Hi Kim -

Rest easy. There are worse things that could happen that being drummed out of a group that isn't helping you.

That may sound flip, but: Man, that drives me nuts!

Honestly, you're the customer in this situation. Your gorup is the one paying dues. If you think you're getting good value and being treated well in exchange for the dues you're paying -- great! If you do not, then don't stay.

Remember: there's no reason for volunteers to feel bad from their volunteering. If you're being made to feel like you're doing something wrong, then something is wrong (but it's not you).

Good luck,

Tim

Well, if they do shut you down you can just form a PTO. Need to be careful though, because I'm sure they will also take whatever $$ you have accumulated in your treasury. But I'm curious--exactly what guidelines are you not following that would cause them to take such a drastic action?

HELP! OUR SCHOOL IS IN PTA H***!!!
ONCE AGAIN WE HAVE BEEN BLASTED BY THE PTA COUNCIL FOR NOT ABIDING BY ALL THE "PTA" GUIDE LINES...AKA "PTA HOOPS" WE ARE NOW IN JEOPORDAY OF BEING SHUT DOWN BECAUSE OUR 5 WONDERFUL SCHOOL VOLUNTEERS ARE NOT VALID ENOUGH TO SATISFY THE COUNCILS REGULATIONS!! WE HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT OUR EFFORT/TIME AT OUR SCHOOL IS NOT VALID UNLESS WE HAVE A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF MEMBERS AND ADHERE TO THE PTA WAY OF DOING THINGS!!!
IN THE 4 YEARS I HAVE BEEN A VOLUNTEER AT OUR SCHOOL,I HAVE NEVER ONCE HAD A PTA COUNCIL PERSON INQUIRE OR SHOW AN INTREST IN WHAT GOOD WE WERE ACHIEVING FOR OUR STUDENTS AND TEACHERS.
