Sept 11 Assembly Ideas

I agree that it might be unwise to make too big of a deal out of it with the younger kids. However, we are a military community, so I think the kids here may be more tuned in to what's going on overseas (or at home); especially when a parent is involved to any degree. I think we'll do something "patriotic" that day to reinforce the positive feelings that emerged after 9/11 rather than focus on the negative.

We asked our principal what he wanted to do and he said, "nothing". At first I was surprised, but he convinced me, too. He feels that our (little) kids had enough exposure to tragedy last Sept 11 and he doesn't want to renew the fear and anxiety. I think we adults feel the need for a commemoration, but I also think we can understand that this is a memorial, not an omen. Kids, on the other hand have moved way beyond the events of Sept 11, 2001 and really don't need to relive them every year of their precious youth. Just another perspective.

By the way, our students built a large garden last year as a tribute to the heroes in our society and as a memorial to those who died 9/11, so there's already a concrete reminder on our school grounds.

Hello. I have planned for a Professor from our local university who specializes in Parent Education come to talk about Crisis or Tragedy Support. She will start talking about Communication then lead into Crisis. We thought this was a great idea, since all the media hype that week will be about the anniversary. We will do it the evening before; and make it about a 90 minute "seminar". Just contact your local college and/or charity ("Outreach") organizations. By the way, this woman is coming for free and she is a Dr.!!

Hope that helps,
Lisa :D

That's a great idea to have a fireman or policeman come to the school. We have thought about selling the red, white or blue suckers that week or day, and sending the profit to families of 9/11. We have thought about the fact that some one might be sensitive about it.

That is such a great idea! I would love to do something like that at our school and would also like to hear ideas. I meet with our new principal (the last one was there 28 years) to discuss new ideas and would love to bring this up.

I was just wondering if anyone out there has any plans to do something special on September 11th? We are trying to come up with some way to commemorate the day, perhaps have local policeman, fireman, etc come into the school and talk to the students. However, would love to hear some other ideas. Thanks in advance!
