Childhood Obesity

If you are in the Eastern US, check out this site, www.YOJO.com It is a very kid friendly assembly program, using a giant 7 foot BLUE mascot to get the point across to the children about eating healthy and treating your body right. They have a "Choose to Read" and an "Ace Your Test" assembly program as well. I hope to be using YoJo for the Ace Your Test program this season. I do know another school that used this program and could not say enough good things about it. Hope that helps you!!

National PTA had a workshop presented by Jennifer Robinson Nutrition consultant from the California Department of Health Services. I think that each state has this government dept. I would look up your state services and see if you can have one of their nutrition consultants do a presentation at your school.
There was also an action plan implemented to help PTAs enact healthy eating guidelines at the school district level and I don't see anything in the action plan that couldn't be used by other parent groups. It has how to's, who to work with, and what to do locally etc.

I would even check when you call the extention office in your area (I found our 4-H group online by going to the county/4-H I think .org) for the Leader/Director of the Foods and Nutrition. You may even find it listed on the website. The Extention Offices work closely with the local University to keep up dated.

That is the website for our county...check it out for info.

I don't know where your from, but our County Agriculture Extension Office received a grant that trained a couple of ladies to come to school and talk about nutrition. We also had an enrichment program that dealt with nutrition sponsored by the 4H (in case you couldn't tell, I'm a country girl). Also you could check with your local college or even a hospital to see if they have any special programs they could share.

I am in charge of booking assemblies for my son's K-4 school and the school nurse has asked me to book something to address health/nutrition/fitness issues due to the increase of childhood obesity. I can't find anything very good. The best I've found is Slim Goodbody and it's only OK. Does anyone have any suggestions??? Thanks!
