How about a read-a-thon with funds going only towards this program? Explain the situation to parents - give the kids pledge sheets $1 per book or 20 pages for chapter books or flat donation $5.

Part of our nightly homework is that all kids read 20 minutes anyway. Log it for a week then collect the pledges. It would take some of the burden off of you and get the community involved.

If you have extra money and would like to help sure go ahead, realistically it should be funded by the school but we all know about those dreaded budget numbers, maybe that is why they asked your group. Will it be cut if the ptos' don't help? How would you feel if it did?

I personally think the schools and districts should be held responsibile

at my daughters school our Library is literally a literacy closet, my home library has more selections of books, and the district thinks its perfectly fine to budget some assinine amount (like $1.52 per student) for books, plus they're GUNGHO on AR (Big YUCK!!!! they way its being used) .

Our school has a literacy closet which contains reading material for grade levels K-5. It contains multiple copies of single title books (6 copies). We are in need of updating and adding to our inventory. Our district like many faces financial challenges. All three of our district elementary schools are in need of these updates - costing roughly $21,000.00 or $7,000.00 per school. Our Superintendent has recommended that they may need to lean on the PTO's for help in building up these closets. Financially we are in the position to help - we recently held a book fair and did well enough that we were able to allow our teacher's the opportunity to purchase $500.00 worth of soft covered books. This was per grade. My question: is this our responsibility or should the school department be held accountable?
