what does the vp do in your school?

Our VP has the very specific duty of managing our volunteer sign-up and organizing the committees. This year, we're using the 2 Hour Power program, so she is also in charge of recognizing our volunteers when they achieve their 2 hour pledge. As part of her job overseeing the committees, she is also responsible for handing out committee folders, helping train committee chairs, and encouraging communicaiton between the committee chairs and the exec board. In some PTO's, this might sound like the job of a separate "Volunteer Coordinator", but we find it gives the traditional VP a meaningful role. It also makes the VP job an easy one to "co" - one VP can oversee half the committees and the other VP can oversee the other half.

Our bylaws state the same as others have posted about assisting the president and acting as pres when not available.

We have 2 VP, one for each building and in our PTA the VP's are the building principal's primary contact. They meet regularly and report back to the board on their buildings needs, concerns, etc. They also direct committees and make sure the chairs are on course.

They, along with the president pick up any duties that they aren't able to recruit another member for. In the past that's meant our VPs have chaired family fun, fundraising and teacher appreciation.

But the V.P.'s job is to support the President and to act in his or her stead when they are not available. This would incude running meetings, etc.

Even when we have had a VP (we do not this year) in the bylaws it states that they are to support the president and act as the pres when they could not be availaable.

We just formed a parent group at our middle school a couple of months ago. You can check out our Bylaws at Petal School District and click onto the middle school. The PTO pages are under the "Information" tab.
We wanted each officer on the board to have specific duties, and assigned all "Teacher Hospitality" duties, and "Used Uniform Sale" duties to our VP.
Another idea to share. When I was in the process of writing our Bylaws, I googled middle school PTAs/PTOs. There are alot of websites, which many have their Bylaws posted. This way you can see many different written Bylaws and pick and choose great ideas from them. Good luck. Cindy

We are a parish school, and the VP is responsible for overseeing all PTO fundraising activites, which include a fall festival, golf tournament, dinner/dance auction, gift wrap sale, and book fair. Each of these events has its own chair(s), but the VP oversees all activities.

Our Vice President is very active! She will host our Boo Hoo Breakfast on the first day of school, coordinate assemblies with the Teacher Representative and be responsible for organizing the PTO booths at our Parish Fair. Last year when I was Vice President, the President did not include me in any meetings or planning and didn't contact me unless she was in desperate need of help. Needless to say, I feel like I'm totally in the dark this year as President. So, I'm including my VP in EVERYTHING so that she won't be in shock when people ask for her attendance and help at certain events. The activities our VP is involved in require her to not only work with some of the teachers, but also to ask for help from all of our families. This will be a great way for her to work with a lot of the families and the faculty. The treasurer and I have also included our VP in our meetings with the Principal and school finance person.
