IRS fees for filing for tax exemption to go up, and then down....

14 years 1 week ago #153495 by mum24kids
Sigh. This notice just released from the IRS--

The IRS has been developing Cyber-Assistant, a Web-based software program, designed to help 501(c)(3) applicants file a complete and accurate application for exemption (Form 1023) and improve the quality and consistency of exemption applications. Unfortunately, software testing has revealed some problems requiring correction prior to public launch, and the IRS must delay the release of Cyber-Assistant beyond this calendar year. Accordingly, the IRS will continue to accept and process all applications using our existing processes and the current user fees will remain in effect for this calendar year.

Glad I just saw this, as we are getting ready to file as we speak.

Any more updates on when CyberAssist will be available?

In the revenue procedure bulletin released yesterday, there were two levels of fees listed for those who use Cyber Assistant. The much publicized fee of $200 is in there for those who use Cyber Assistant "prepared by an Authorized Cyber Assistant Host," but then it is listed as being $850 "After Cyber Assistant Availability if NOT Prepared by an Authorized Cyber Assistant Host."

So, the question is will these authorized hosts charge a fee?? I couldn't find the final approved application to be a cyber assistant host, so I couldn't tell if, as part of the application, they ask companies if they plan to charge some sort of processing fees or if they put any limits on such fees. I talked with two different IRS agents today, and they have not yet been trained on this issue, so no answers there. They couldn't even tell me if application process was still available for companies to file to be considered a Cyber Assistant Host. However, just like H&R Block and others charge individuals some sort of fee to file your tax return electronically, I would expect some kind of charge. Let's just hope it's not $650 or more!

And they are still saying Cyber Assistant will be available sometime in 2010.

Maybe PTO Today could apply to be a Cyber Assistant Host? :-)

I've been following this also and haven't seen any indication of an actual date. On the IRS site, nothing seems to have been updated since October - basically that it will be implemented in 2010.

One thing that does have me wondering is that I've seen some discussions that the IRS intends to authorize private sector (for profit) entities to host Cyber Assistant.

While the IRS fee for those who file with Cyber Assistant will be $200, it's not clear if the company/companies hosting the program will also charge fees to access the software.

does anyone have any idea when in 2010 Cyber Assistant will be available?

Tim, yes! I did notice the price incentive to use their CyberAssistant software. We are fortunate to have a CPA for our treasurer. I know she'll choose to use the software just for the savings =)

I have found these forums and the PTO informational articles to be pertinent, timely, informative, and thorough. Thank You!!
