It went better than I could have ever have hoped for!!! :) we had a great Parent turn out!!
Believe it or not we got more done than I had planned :)
It was decided that the SP would get these box tops but thats it :( I feel bad for the SP but it was a middle ground

I didnt get voted out, and I didnt step down I dont feel that I was wrong for wanting to do what was right. I made a few Teachers mad, when they couldnt just pass stuff on their own. that was kinda funny, I think I need to pass out Roberts rules of Order of how voting is done.

3 more months then Im done for this year :) I might try the PTO board again in a couple of years.

Thanks for all your help!! I would have not been able to do nearly as much without PTOtoday :)

First of all, I agree with you from your description that the money needs to go to the Safety Patrol. I would say there is at least an ethical obligation to use the money for that purpose.

Can you ask the principal to intervene? After all, he has some responsibility in this situation. It might be helpful to ask him to mediate. One solution might be to hold a separate fundraiser for the safety patrol to make up the money.

Regarding the idea that you could be voted out of office, check your bylaws. They should state a specific procedure for removing you from office. I'm guessing it's not a simple board vote. If the bylaws don't state a procedure, Robert's Rules calls for a hearing and only allows you to be removed for cause. A simple mistake like this isn't cause, at least in my book. Either way, you should have an opportunity to make your case -- and you should enlist the principal on your side, if possible. I certainly hope it doesn't come to that.

Good luck, and please let us know how this turns out.

Craig,
I just found out that I am to be voted out tomorrow, Im am the PTO President.
My offense was not being able to only do what the previous PTO person was (b4 this year it was only 1 person) we have a whole board, the previos person is now the treasurer.

What happened was this:
our school does box tops, the box tops were given to the safety patrol (1st year for this and the treasurer does NOT like it) by given I mean a verbal agreement was made between the box top coordinator(treasurers daughter) and the school Principal(1st year at the school) on our school newsletter it states that Safety Patrol is collecting box tops for their trip to washington, in our November minutes it states that SP is collecting them. well the check came and the PTO was on the check. the Principal gave it to the box top coorinator annd told her it needed to go to the board before getting deposited, well it didnt. In the next meeting as the treasurer read the report she did say that we had a deposit from box tops I didnt catch it :( ... there was a vote later to buy some books for the school, the treasurer said lets us the box top money... and it was voted to buy them with the box tops....

well when I realized what we had done I brought it up that it was SP money and we needed to give it to them... well she told me for 30mins that it was not theres and she wouldnt give it back....
we had a special meeting to work this out (the board) myself and the VP think its no question that the money should go to the SP the school sent home newletters stating it was SPs and in our own minutes there was no objections I feel its the intergerty of the PTO on the line.
the treasurer also wants to tell the school that we will no longer pay for the books becouse we are not using the box top money..
the treasurer called for a vote of all the members so tomorrow that is what we are going to do, today at school (I volunteer) I heard that I am going to be voted out for spending the PTOs money unwisely

what should I do?

You can adopt a new bylaw at any time. Once that bylaw is approved, you can use it to remove an officer. I wouldn't necessarily recommend doing these things one right after another if it's likely to create controversy. But if it's straightforward -- you have an officer who doesn't show up at all or in some other way clearly isn't fit for the office -- it can work.

You would have to refer to Roberts Rules for the process to remove them if it is not in your bylaws. And it's not worth it if you have elections soon.
