Changing ByLaws

I agreethat the changes can be made and need to be proposed, advertised and voted on. Our by-laws state that an officer is elected for 2 years and can serve again if elected when the term is up. I am currently in my 3rd year as Pres and my wife is counting the days until I am done. Also, currently the Pres and VP get elected one year and the Treas and Sec. get elected the next, this way we should never have an all new board.

In our PTA our bylaws state that you must have elections each year and that you may hold the office no more than two years consecutively. Our bylaws can be changed any time as long as there is a committee to work on the changes, then we must present them to our general membership, post them for 30 days and then vote on the changes at a general membership meeting and it takes a 2/3 vote to pass. My concern about not having an election each year and automatically letting the president serve 2 terms is what do you do if they're not a good president and you don't want them again the second year? Then your locked in. In our case the president almost always serves 2 consecutive years ie; they get elected to a second term. Do you have a lot of people vieing(sp?) for positions in your PTO? Usually only the core group in ours is willing to hold offices and we usually just work out whose going to run for what and when (depending on the age/grade of our children), because we no sooner or later we're all going to get our turn. We have a lot of volunteers but not a lot like to give the time committment to hold an office.

Help!!
My name is Anna and this is my first year as PTO Chairperson. I was elected because unfortuanetly nobody else wanted the job. It has been a tough year, I have never been involved in PTO. Usually the Chair Elect moves up to fill this position, but he was asked not to do so.... Here is my question- I would like a chance to Chair next year - I think that it is only fair as this year was basically my "Chair Elect" year of learning. We thought of rewriting the ByLaws so that the Chair could serve 1-2 years. How do we word this. Is it okay to change the ByLaws in mid stream!! HELP
Thank you
