The IRS has a searchable database of exempt organizations. The site is:

I am the new PTO President at our Middle School. After doing some research I have learned that we have a tax exempt number and some type of ID number but I see nothing indicating anything about being a 501(c)3 status. I would appreciate if someone could advise me where to start to find out if we are or not. Thanks
