Principal Discontinuing Elementary PTO

22 years 7 months ago #56067 by pmwm
Have you reviewed the school district policies regarding parent groups? Does the principal have the authority to do this? If there are legally binding by-laws they should set a way for the group to be disbanded. What happens to any funds? Do you have any legal status, IRS status, etc. Check with the school board and take it to them if necessary.

I can't believe your principal is doing this. Doesn't she understand how important the PTO is to the school? Our school has a Booster Club and a group such as the one you describe. We both are very important to the school, however, we focus on different things. Our Booster Club handles all the fundraising, special events and things like that and the other group focuses on educating parents on their child's needs, paying particular attention to the parent's who need more education as to their children's needs. These two entities work totally separate from eachother. The school could probably do without the other group, however, we could not do it without the Booster Club. Please go to your principal and discuss this with her. Stress the importance of having a PTO/Booster Club and what all you do for the school. Something must have happened to make her form a misguided opinion of the PTO. Sit with her and discuss it and let her know, she needs you, the school needs you and the children need you. Good Luck!

I am concerned. What events have occurred that would direct a principal to disband a PTO? How has she decided to handle the fundraising, community/family involvement pieces so crucial to the PTO? It certainly
wouldn't make me feel welcome.

Wow, this sounds bad! Have you tried to meet with the Principal and ask why? If that doesn't work you could go to your district and/or school board with a group to ask why. Try to get as much info as you can and present the school board with all the good things the PTO has done in the past and your goals for the future. I know our school would have a hard time with many of the programs without the PTO!!

Good luck!

Our principal @ our elementary school has decided without any other inputs (parents) not to have our PTO. Wants to form a "taskforce" which would involve 5 teachers, classified staff member, 3 parents, community member. We have had a active PTO in the past. Does anybody know parents' right to continue the PTO w/o the principal involvement? Please respond. Thanks a Bunch!
