Oh my goodness, how tragic. Can you find a tax expert real quick to ask? Can you have a quick fund drive organized by the PTO where you take donations to offset the funeral expenses. That is SO sad and I am so sorry.

One of our pre-school children passed away on Thursday. Normally, we would send flowers, but the parents are very low income and have asked for monetary donations to offset the funeral costs.

We do not have 501(c)3 tax exempt status yet, and our by-laws are silent regarding any donations other than political ones (which we are against.) So, what I am asking is can we legally give this family a monetary gift?
