I mention your honest reasons for the change. Say what you said here, that it does affect your child as well but the group has to consider where every dollar is best spent for each child and this was the decision, after carefil consideration, for the year. At the end of the year, if this has not worked for the best, it can always be reworked for next year, in the mean time, if some parents want to raise money for this purpose-let them, or at the least remind them that you are voted in members and they are welcome to run for your positions next year.

What would you suggest we as the board say if the group shows up to complain other than explain our reasoning for the decrease? The decrease was a long time coming and was done through the guidance of our principal and teacher
reps. the money was redistributed to benefit the
entire school rather than one grade. Complaints have come the last couple of years from parents/staff that the event that was paid for was a waste of money and should be toned down. We agree and made the tough decision to do it. This decision affects my own child but I believe it
is the right decision.

Though I can't speak for your group, I know from my experience here, a lot of us do not allow for line item changes at the general meeting level. This is something we are working on putting into our bylaws so you might check yours. The most that can be done is a motion be made for the board to reconsider the approval of funds for said line item and for whatever the reasons may be. Considering your board made the changes in the first place, they probably have some reasons for it that they can back up their decision. Honestly, once our budget is agreed upon, unless there is a huge increase or decrease in anticipated income, we don't allow for changes because we don't really change that much from year to year and we believe in good planning. I have a question I'm hoping someone can help me with. Our PTO had a budget meeting in September and the budget was approved. The problem is that we decreased an area of the budget that has some parents feathers ruffled. Though the budget is approved with the decrease, these parents are wanting to come to the Oct. meeting and make a motion to have this item increased back to what it was even though it's already approved from Sept. There is nothing specific about it in the bylaws but wasn't sure if there was something in Robt rules that talks about this issue.
