I was just given a copy of an email that was sent to our principal regarding our PTO funds that reads..."This is just a reminder, but you need to expend the backload of the PTO funds. Any large amounts that carry over from year to year would look suspicious in an audit. Please keep me advised." This was sent to the principal, not the PTO...like it is his money or something. Now for the history, When I became President our PTO had been saving money to buy computers for the classrooms. We had saved close to $20,000 when we passed a technology bond that provided what we had been saving for. We have since purchased encylcopedias and classromm sets of dictionaries (we had none before), we pay for ALL field trips 100% including chartered buses because we are a "walking" school, we paid for the playground 100%, we give each classroom teacher $250.00 a year for supplies, we pay 100% for all assemblies and we also purchase the scholastic weekly news for each class...just to name a few. We manage to have only one fundraiser a year and the other fundraiser a "walk-a-thon" all the money that we raise is donated to the Shriner's. We are in the process of obtaining our 501c3, for some reason we had always used the district's tax id number. We do submit our finacial statement to the district business manager every year and he told us none of our funds are placed any where on the districts reports. We keep very accurate records as well. The super has also made it difficult for us to purchase anything for instance the KDG teacher made a request for new kitchen play food and our group approved it...but our principal informed us that it has to be approved at the school board meeting before we can purchase it. I also know she cannot disband our group or deny us accsess to using school property because the district will lose funding if each school does not have an active parent group. We do carry over around ten thousand dollars...not because we want to but because but because our fundraiser makes about $14,000 a year for us and we still have not spent all of the money we had saved...even after purchasing free school shirts for every student and staff as well as personalized water bottles and a die-cut machine with $4,000 of die cuts. We are living in a district with dangerously over crowded class sizes that has given pink slips to 16 new wonderful teachers and is abolishing our HOSTS reading program for kids who need help...our roof leaks and we have buckets to catch the water when it rains and this women is micro-managing a PTO that picks up the slack for things the district does not supply. Sorry for rambling....Any Advice???
