discipline techniques

I typically do not go with the flow and I try to give as much room for error as possible - but, this one has me frustrated. Our Principal is not well liked - he lacks communication skills to the point of coming across as ungrateful and rude - that we have dealt with - but, his discipline seems to be from the time when I was in grade school - lets just say a while back.

Although there have been many issues that I thought were inappropriately handled - now he has resorted to making the entire middle school eat in silence in the cafeteria because a group of kids were not quiet enough.

I am not a teacher and I understand the job can be frustrating - but, just as I chose my profession - he has chosen his and needs to keep his anger in check and update his skills toolbox. I feel this approach only adds to the locker and hallway drama that is already so hard for the kids at this age.

We had a "sit down" with him last year on another issue that was poorly handled and now he only speaks to me if I speak first, and even that is more of a head nod - truly making me count the days we have left and wonder if it rubs off onto my kids. That being said - I am looking for feedback - is this acceptable in schools now? Does this appear to anyone else as something that would cause more peer problems and bullying?
