Inspirations - 2001

Every year we sponsor a Harvest Feast the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. All of the kids eat lunch in the gym and we have some sort of presentation. We give a flyer to each student which says "I am thankful for". The kids then write a short article. This year each teacher chose one flyer from each class to be read that day in front of the student body. Two of the short essays read, "I am thankful to the PTA for all they do for our school". This brought tears to my eyes. All of us volunteers work so hard and it is great to know that the kids notice what we do. Afterall this is what we are here for... the kids!!!

I have spent nearly 6 years roaming the halls of our middle school. Though it may not be what you were looking for here, this memory will remain with me forever. There was a girl, who just rubbed everyone the wrong way. I knew both the girl and her family so her demeanor never surprised me. This gal was just a real tough nut. If you did see her smile you knew she had just done something wrong. She literally growled and scowled through the hall way. One day after school she was shoving her way through the hall, as usual, when all of a sudden I saw her face light up like the sun. She began screaming "Mom! Mom! what are you doing here? Hey everyone this is my mom!" Inspire me? Yes, everyone of these kids deserve to be treated with the utmost of respect and a broad, broad compassionate mind. Sorry have to end my post. I think I'll go visit the school! Best Wishes!

Jpres, I didn't even notice the typo until you pointed it out (& I usually catch them - not mine though).

I happened to be walking down the hall at our school with the principal one day. (I don't usually have the luxury of being there during the day, but there was a meeting that morning.) Anyway, EVERY child we met smiled warmly at the principal & said "Good Morning, Mr. ____". Some were just plain excited that they encountered him - you could tell by their expression & tone of voice! It was really neat to see! He of course smiled back & said good morning & I think he called them by name also. (I grew up in the day & age when you FEARED the principal.) I just love that my son is learning in such a caring environment.

I told the principal that I felt like I was with a celebrity! And in the kids' eyes I definitely was!

This one is Bitterswwet!!!

One day after I was doing some PTO paperwork in our teachers workroom as I was walking down the hallway I saw my 2nd grade daughter with a classmate at the water fountain. My daughter came up to me and gave me a big hug and smile. As I was walking away, the litte boy with her said "you are so lucky, I hardly ever get to see my mom." Now, I know for a fact his mom works and travels alot. So of course I felt really sad for him, but it reminded me of why I do all the volunteering at my daughters school. It is always for the children!!!!

When a family in our school lost their house and all of their belongings in a fire. Our pto gave them a cash donation of $200.00. Because they were new to the area with no close friends or family and were renters with no rental insurance it was devastating. They were in a shelter that was for women and children so the father could not be with them. The day after we gave them the check their youngest of four kids who is in kdg. came into the office an handed me a card. He was so happy. He told me his mom cried and then assured me that she was crying happy tears. He also said that his dad and mom had big happy smiles. He said in a real low voice,"you know that haven't smiled big in a real long time". I'm happy to report that through members of our generous community they are in a new home and getting back on their feet. I will never forget how happy that little boy was not because he was able to get new clothes but because his mom and dad "smiled big".
