We did this at our school this year and it was very well received. There was already a program that was recognizing the kids, so we piggy backed on that. Our school is called Elm Street and we have a tree painted on the wall in our lobby. The children get leaves put on the tree for acts of kindess or outstanding behavior. We (the PTO) started a program where you could nominate an adult volunteer or individual who had supported the school in some great way. An apple was placed on the tree with the person's name to recognize their contribution. Further, if it was a parent, a certificate was sent home with their child to let them know about the recognition. Kids were very proud when their parent's name showed up on an apple on the tree.
I actually just heard a great bulletin board idea yesterday that I intend to try when school gets started. That was posting the names of volunteers (with "Great job" & "Thanks"or something) who helped out in the school store, classroom or media center or at an event. We are having terrible time getting people to volunteer at least this will make them feel apprieciated.

I saw a really cute bulletin board at one of our elementary schools. They used foam board and cut out a stop sign, an eye, and some scissors. They were very eye catching. It's so much better than using plain old paper and border. A few of us are going to pull our money together and do this. I just wish I knew someone who worked at a craft store so I could get a discount. LOL

ptohyeah...no i dont sneak them, i have to say that i worried about them not wanting to do it either. being our first year we received them back from probably 60% of our volunteers, once they knew that others were doing it, that it was meant to be fun they did it. I have to say the response we got from long timers/senior citizens was great. it was so nice to read their memories. we also had the profile in our volunteer packet so that helped, the pictures were sneaked some...but everyone knew it was in fun. I also have a great fun relationship with alot of volunteers and am known to be a clown so i told them that i would make up stuff for them if i had to...ha ha ha
