It will take some time to disban and a lot of energy. First start with your State and Unit By-Laws. Follow the disbanning rules to a "T" or someone can call you on them. Have you talked with the Principal who could find out possibly what kind of support you would get from the teachers. It would be nice to have there backing. Every State and Unit has different By-Laws so I'm not sure what your next step would be. This is what we did in Ohio.
1. Made up fact sheet on PTO or PTA
which we sent home with the kids.
2. Follow your By-Laws and if you don't
call your local PTA Rep, they must
give you the answers you can also
ask them to substantiate them in
WRITING and from what By-Laws.
3. Our State By-Laws stated that we
had to send standard letters to
every PTA members (adequate notice
30 days per PTA) stating that there
would be discussion and representation
from PTA and PTO. You must call in a
PTA rep (should be in by-laws). In
this letter place, time, and location.
4. At this meeting have your facts
together for your presentation of PTO.
If you can find a local PTO rep from
another school to attend this would
be great. At this meeting, have a
Funds Dispersment List of Items to
be bought with remaining funds. It
you do not spend this money it becomes
PTA money. (I have read that they
will come in and spend it in your
school, not positive.) A motion must
be made that if ...... unit disbans
the following list, in no special
order, will be voted on per item
money is gone. Before adjourning
this meeting tell them that the vote
will be at next months meeting, give
date, time or times*, and location.
(We had two voting times so teachers
and parents who pick-up their kids
when school is out could vote then.
We received a phone call we couldn't
do this until the meeting at 7:30 p.m.
Therefore, we called the meeting to
order at 3 p.m. in the lobby for one
hour, recessed for dinner and prepare
what needed to be done with the
children and returned at 7:30 p.m
regular meeting time. (Ballot box,
alphabetical membership list, and
numbered ballots were locked in the
office.) If you do early time vote,
no discussion, you can answer
questions, and have the Disbursment
List available to read and if they
were for the way this would be spent
have them initial by their name on
the membership list.
5. Meeting reconvened at it's regular
time. Depending on how long your
meeting lasts this is how you will
decide the vote time at this meeting.
(Don't forget to present and make a
motion on the Funds Disbursment prior
to this second vote time.)
Our voting during this time was set
from 7:30 to 9 p.m. At this time the
President appoints at least two people
to tally the votes. Nice to have a
PTA person count and a PTO person.

We are a new board that has had enough of the PTA. How long does it take to disban and where should we start so as not to create any bad repercussions?
