We just received our quote from AIM and found them very helpful, not only in the cost but also with information. Call them up and they can answer alot of your questions on what kind and how much coverage you need.
Good Luck!

Any one can get insurance. Even though we are a PTA we still use a local insurance company to "bond" our 15 units. Mind you this only helps if money is taken by one of the bonded individuals. We have several local insurance companies checking into liability coverage and theft coverage. The stumbling block with theft is that usually PTA/PTO's do not secure their money enough until it gets to the bank. (You have to have a safe that cannot be carried off)The insurance question should not weigh into your decision to leave PTA. Tim is right. You all need to decide what type of organization you want to have. I am interested in why you do want to leave?

Hi Cheech -

Seems like last night was difficult. It shouldn't have to be.

The insurance question is quite common. PTOs can and do get insured all the time. It's easy. In fact, we have a feature story on insurance coming up in our back-to-school issue. Let me give you a preview:

We recommend that groups check to see if they are covered under a school policy. Some are, but ask for written confirmation before you take a school or district's word on it.

If not, we recommend at a minimum a general liability policy that covers your group and its officers and members. You could get one from many local agents, but we recommend using one of the two agents in the country that specialize in insuring parent groups. That specialization will help you in terms of consultation and price.

They are:

AIM 800-876-4044

and

RV Nuccio 800-567-2685

Both have parent group products for both PTAs and PTOs. In some cases, you might pay a bit more for a PTO policy (because some state PTAs get a group discount), but it shouldn't be a huge difference. Compare policies and prices.

In my opinion, your group should decide whether being a PTA fits with your goals. If yes -- great. If no -- that's fine, too. It's absolutely possible for a PTO to be carefully run, and incorporated, and a nonprofit, and insured and yadda, yadda, yadda, if that's what you want.

Good luck,

Tim
