Hi mamain06,
If you are working with the PTO and your initiative is in line with the overall mission of the PTO, then you should have not problem. Have you talked to your PTO about this? What's their feedback?

I'm interested in trying to start a clothing closet/food bank/community help center at my school through the PTO. We have a backpack program that gives children a backpack filled with food for the weekend but I would like to try to expand on this. I would like to get donations of food, clothing, hygiene products, diapers and more to give out to people in my community. We have a couple of centers in our town already but they are mostly just food. Does anyone know if I can do something like this with the PTO tax ID or would I have to start a new non-profit. Thank you for any help/advice.
