Math Night

We did one a few years ago. Each grade level was using several games to teach their math concepts, and on math night each teacher ran a table playing one of the games. So, since we had three 1st grade classrooms we had three different games teaching those math concepts.

The typical family evening began with kids taking their parents to the game their teacher was running, followed by the other games at their grade level. Then the kids started self-distributing, moving up or down grades as their personal skill and comfort level warranted. (The 4th graders were in awe of my then 1st grader as she kept beating them at their game.)

At the end of the night, each family got a packet with instructions for each of the games that was being offered. So, basically, it was pretty much the same as the one you describe.

The night seemed to be a hit, and I'm really not sure why we haven't done one since. The way we did it, every teacher was required to be there manning a table for the two hours. They may not have cared a lot for that, but there is no reason parent and/or student volunteers couldn't help.

OK, I am answering my own question. I went and spied on an elementary school's math night. They had math games in different class rooms for the parents and kids to participate in. The teachers were the ones who taught the fun math games. What the kids loved is that beforehand they did "estimations". For example they estimated how many pennies in a line it would take to measure the gym, how many licks it would take a certain teacher to get to the middle of a lollipop, what the circumfrence of a certain teachers head was, how much a certain teacher would weigh on Jupiter, the difference in weght between a jar of preztles and a jar of cheese nips. The winner or winners were given a small prize for the correct answer. It was a fun, learning event. At the end the kids were given a packet with a deck of cards, geometric shapes, dice, and flyers to play some of the math games at home.

Has anyone ever done a math night? If so how well did it go over? Also, what did you do? This sounds like a neat event to try.
