Craft Workshops

Hi,
I am a crafter and past PTA president. Our current board has decided NOT to do a Santas Shop this year because of the "junk" that the companies bring in for the kids to purchase. The idea of a craft show intrigues me. Was the show done during school hours or on a Saturday?
Thanks for any input!

Several of our elementary schools do a Candy Cane Lane type thing. They rent tables to crafters for $10.00. The crafters know that anything they make cannot be priced over $3.00. The older grade levels take lunch bags and decorate them with holiday stamps or splatter paint them (different every year). Most of the crafters are parents or people found word of mouth. We have about 350 students and there are about 20 tables set up in the gym against the walls. The students are sent home a form of who they should buy for and how much money is enclosed. The students receive shopping help from older grade level students and parent volunteers. They also tag the bags with the recipients name (from the list) because the little ones forget almost right away. Usually lacking in the gift catagory are things for dads, brothers and grandfathers. Most everything is hand made. Yes, one year dad received a crystal necklace. (We decided it would look beautiful on the Christmas tree... and it has ever since.) Very nice.

Our school used to do a crafts workshop to be used as presents. I'm trying to remember what we had - popsicle sticks to make picture frames (also used buttons, old puzzle pieces, etc), we had felt pieces and paint to make wall hangings (like welcome) with a ring on top to hang with.

I'm having a brain freeze right now and can't think of anything else that was done. Anyway, because of lack of parent help, we now do the holiday bazaar where we buy things throughout the year at the dollar store and sell to the children cheap.

Good luck.

Hi!
I haven't done this at school but in my friends neighborhood we did and had a blast!
She had kits she bought at WalMart and a few other craft stores, and asked each family for enough to cover her costs on the kits. The little ones got to finger paint while the school aged children bought kits from $1 to $5. I live 20 miles away but still invited with my four to partake in the fun! Hope this helps and you just gave me a great idea!! Thanks!

We are a small charter school (88 students K-8) and have limited parental involvement. The PTO was asked by the school secretary(actually told but that's another story) that we have to do a Santa's Secret Shop. This was at our June meeting. The membership did not agree and no action was taken but there are definitely some people who think the commercial "shops" sell alot of junk and do not appreciate them. We have been meeting throughout the summer at "Park Days" for kids and parents to stay acquainted and we have come up with the idea of a Craft Workshop for the children to make crafts to give to parents/grandparents. Possibly 4-5 crafts to choose from (or do them all) for a small fee (depends on the activity). Has anyone tried this? Any ideas of crafts to do? Thanks alot!
