ERRORS IN NEWSLETTERS! HELP!!

19 years 6 months ago #100696 by wdaj13
When I write up the minutes, I alway send a copy on to our President. She goes over it and corrects and adds what needs to be done. I have never been offended by this. We are all human and make errors.

I always had the principal to look at ours. It was sort of standard anyhow. 1) My grammar and spelling are poor and I did not always get to use Word. 2) I did not want to be responsible for miswording something the school could be sued for. LOL!

I don't expect the things to be perfect. If parents are complaining I would devise a new plan to not make her feel like an idiot.

I also did the newsletter in years past, I also cannot stand mispelled words. I used to get articles from our President at the time and I would proof-read it and then correct any errors. She did not have a problem with it. It's a poor example to our kids when their parents appear to not be able to spell. (Even if they can't, in an age with spell-check AND others to proof-read it, there really is no good excuse for it)
That being said, in Council, I have dealt with some very sensitive people. While I understand that they may not handle criticism well, if they are doing something that is meant to represent your group, it would not be inappropriate to help them correct it. However, DO NOT involve another party.
Many of us will tell you, it is much easier to be approached FIRST hand about something then it is to hear that "someone has brought it to my attention". Just pull this woman aside and start with something like, "I know how much work goes into putting together the newsletter and you are doing a terrific job. However, sometimes things get past even the best of us and it's always good to have a second, fresh set of eyes to look it over, just in case you missed an error."

I've been doing our newsletter for the past four years and the nicest thing anyone ever made me do is have it proof read!! I have the Principal, her assistant and in years past the High School English teacher (she is now on to better things).

You bet I still miss a word here and there but nothing that can't be fixed.

***same problem with the school newsletter, the PTO Board brought it back with red marks on each error! 101!!! NOT KIDDING! Pointed out the double standard and everyone agreed.

~I approve this post but cannot be held accountable for the fact I am a terrible speller and type slower than I can think!! :D

I WAS OUR PTO GROUP'S SECRETARY LAST YEAR AND THIS YEAR I AM THE VP. MY QUESTIONS IS THIS...HOW SHOULD YOU APPROACH THE SUBJECT OF SPELLING ERRORS IN THE NEWSLETTERS??OUR NEW SECRETARY WHO WAS THE VP LAST YEAR HAS BEEN DOING THE NEWSLETTERS THIS YEAR AND EVERY ONE OF THEM HAS ERRORS. (PARENTS HAVE COMPLAINED AND ASKED QUESTIONS)I DON'T WANT TO UPSET HER OR CAUSE A MAJOR RIFT WITH HER, BECAUSE IN THE PAST SHE HAS GOTTEN VERY DEFENSIVE WHEN GIVEN ANY SUGGESTIONS, CRITICISM. I THOUGHT OF GOING TO THE PREZ, OR MAYBE SUGGESTING THAT SHE GIVE A COPY OF THE NEWSLETTER TO EACH BOARD MEMBER, BEFORE PASSING IT ON THE STUDENTS, SO THAT WE HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO ADD ANYTHING, OR EDIT IT FOR HER. (THIS IS WHAT I DID LAST YEAR, AND IT WORKED VERY WELL, IT'S HARD SOMETIMES TO CATCH THE ERRORS ON YOUR OWN WORK...) ANYWAY, ANY SUGGESTIONS YOU MIGHT HAVE WOULD BE VERY APPRECIATED!!! THANKS
