Over powering PTO president

16 years 7 months ago #137637 by HESHERO
Well it could be worse, at least is assertive, ours has no backbone and won't make a decision without asking the opinion of a key few people and then changes her opinion as theirs change. I am all for getting opinions from folks but not the SAME ones over and over and don't change yours just becuase your best friend has a different one...

same here our president just assumed the position and we are in a similar situation - so here's my story - first I was afraid to say something to her however then I realized why?? what could actually happen - she would be mad that we/i want her to improve her leadership skills...not say hello to me in the hall, etc...

We want a good leader and I am sure your president wants to be liked and respected so...with that said - meet with her to explain your observations and suggestions. You have to be willing to take this risk, remember no one else will do it for you, over throw is a little strong, this will not only be negative for the current president but it will also be negative for the new leadership. I imagine it will lead to lots of gossip "oh you know the new leadership is very clicky and if they don't like you your out", etc...

Do your homework on leadership skills - write it down and show her the areas that need improvement, remind her that you want to work with her to make the PTO a place where everyone feels that they are appreciated and part of a team, etc...

Good luck - will see if it works for our school - I just talked to our president on friday.

Ouch Down--I think mom came here cause she is looking to do something and we try our best to work through things with the folks that sign onto the boards.
Mom--if there are no bylaws...and there was no vote, perhaps you can tell if there is the possibility of holding elections now. If you have someone that is willing to take on the President's position, I suspect that the "old" person may be happy to leave the job to someone else. PTO VA gave some good thoughts...I suspect some anger etc issues may be born of frustration. A good "second" may be the answer--an inviting personality looking to support the groups goals. But first folks have to belly up and show up to assist in the decision making process. That means an off line meeting with the current president not to complain about her but to see where the group is headed and then maybe an quick meeting with other interested parents who are willing to take the burden from the one or two folks doing the work.

Hope that pulls you all together as a team to work to benefit your children's education. They deserve parents that will make this experience fun and enjoyable to instill a love of learning all the way around....

It seems no one wants to take over any PTO responsibility, yet everyone complains when the same person gets stuck every year. Most sane PTO bylaws state that the Pres stays on till someone new becomes Pres elect. So is it possible your Pres, is just aggrevated that there is no one in the entire school coming forward to assume responsibility, and resents you all? If you are complaining here...it seems you're not much help in the situation. Get off line and do something about your situation, or stop complaining.

Have you tried talking to her? I feel sooo sorry for any president trying to do a good job. Its seems if you are not a patsy for the board you are poorly labeled. I have never heard of a person putting themselves in a position without a vote. You read the minutes from last year to confirm that suspicion. Questions you need to ask yourself. Is the new Pres making suggestions that are good for the children? and do you have the time she does to improve the school? If parents do not work together the schools will be more than happy to show the PTO the door people tend to forget the parents are to work together for the betterment of their own childs education experience do not expect the school to do it for you

As far as I know there were never bylaws drawn.
