PTO paying for school salaries

Thanks for your feedback so far. I hope to see more form others as well.

This practice of PTO/A's paying for staffed positions is becoming more and more normal, at least here in the Southern California area. I'm extremely frustrated by the situation and how it hand-ties our ability to make other purchases that the school could use such as additional or newer computers. Since you mentioned our budget size just for reference it is on the order of $85k for the year. I think we are in the midrange compared to the local PTA schools. We are one of I think two PTO's in our school district. The bottom line, as it stand now, is if we don't pay for these positions they will most likely go away and the students will suffer. There are other financial issues within our district however I didn't want to influence your thought on the initial question by adding these factors.

That's not anywhere in our budget. Bad situation to be in.

We only pay for student activities, educational materials we would neve be able to raise those kinds of funds to pay for salaries.

What would happen if you didnt raise the funds needed? Has the school ever looked into getting them funded by grants?

My god your budget must be astronomical!!! Yikes

As far as our PTO is concerned, the money that is raised in any given year is to be spent on our students. If our school needed the positions that your PTO is paying for, then we would rely on volunteers to step in.

If I were you, I would look to the community and/or local businesses to help out. You might even want to check into seeking help from one or more corporations. Asking your PTO to spend over 50% of the budget on salaries is a bit much in my opinion.

You might want to check your bylaws to see if you are following them. Good luck to you.

Our PTO has over the years taken on all or part of the salaries of several position sin the school including the Heath Aid, Science Teacher and Computer Technicians Teachers. This is now adding up to over 50% of out budget and is growing. Is this normal for your schools? How do you determine what should be the school districts responsibility or the PTO's? What if the District is deciding not to pay for specific positions but will allow you to fund them if you want to keep them? Doesn't this just create the situation where the District comes to rely on the PTO to make up a portion of the budget that is really required to run the school? How do you decide where to draw the line and say we can't do this anymore?
