Back to school packets

We have a Volunteer/PTO Membership form. We put those out at our school supply sales before school starts. We also send this form home the first week of school. We then have a Volunteer Breakfast about the 3rd week of school. The volunteers come at that time and we briefly go over the volunteer opportunites. Be sure to get with all the staff to see what they need volunteers for. Items we have included are: library help, staff appreciation week, ice cream sales, book fair, all health day (our nurse requested that) and others. We are very fortunate at our school to have many volunteers.

I researched a PTA that put important papers together for their school(PTA information to emergency school forms). But instead of sending them home, they had a Back to School Night where one guardian needed to attend. They sent out fliers two weeks beforehand to explain Back to School Night. The PTA provided babysitting. The principal gave an open assembly on school rules, safety and other pertinent information. Then guardians proceeded to their child's classrooms. The teacher provides parents with information that is vital to his/her classroom. The guardian goes over and fills out the forms with the teacher. This event should be held on several nights to accomdate parents with multiple children. Teachers get the materials back that night. Bonus: Parents get a "feel" for their child's teacher. Also, a chance for schools clubs, PTA and lunch personnel to give parents inforamtion concerning their respective areas.

Hi, last year we got a first day pack that included everything from pta stuff to emergency contact forms. Everything was copied at the school and volunteers put the packs together.
This year as pta pres, I'm just going to write a brief letter explaining what the pta is going to be doing, where membership dues go, and asking for volunteers. I'm hoping to be able to put it on coloured paper so that it stands out in the pack. :> ) I think we also have a volunteer form and the pta membership envelopes in the pack. Then on fridays we have "friday folders" and the pta newsletter goes out in those along with whatever else is being announced.
Good luck, maggie

Last year for the first time (my first year as president) our PTA made packets that were sent home with each student the first week of school that was filled with different things the PTA is doing throughout the year, volunteer forms, membership, etc. We put these in the two sided folders (only about 1/4 of them were returned). Between purchasing 550 folders, plus photocopying we spent quite a bit of money that we don't have this year.

What does everyone do? Do you do packets and if so, what useful info do you put in them? I was thinking of just buying the manilla envelopes and putting everything in there. I'm open for suggestions.

Thanks.
