I believe the foundation of a good PTO is strong parental commitment to the school and the kids. Is this person still showing 100% commitment? "Disgruntled" or not, all Board Members should be committed to the school and the children who attend. Through his actions, this person has shown he is not committed to the school any longer. You must have a VP or other board member who would be willing to take on his position for the remainder of the year. Without appearing like a tyranny, it might be best for your board to approach this person with this commitment issue. His answer will be obvious. In regards to his issues with commiting 100% to the school's PTO, tell him you feel it would be in the best interest of all if he stepped down. (Your principal's support would be great in this type of situation.) Not immediately, of course. His stepping down could be under the guise of a transition for the new prez. Announce the new principal in your newsletter, thank Mr. "Disgruntled" for serving his term, etc. He will still "save face" and your PTO parental supporters will be happy and the kids will only benefit by having a wholly committed PTO. Bad mouthing or whispering behind backs will get no one anywhere except cause ill feelings in the school community. Not a good example for the kids, do you think?

This person should step down; perhaps this is his plan. However, out of respect for the school and for the position, he should do this in a timely manner. The President of the PTO must be someone who has children at the school that he represents. This should be in the bylaws and a requirement. The principal of the school should enforce this. We are a small Catholic school. Recently the Pres of PTO was disgruntled and enrolled his kids for next year in the competion...another Christian school. The kids are still at our school now, but some parents think he should step down since he has already committed his kids elsewhere next year. He doesn't want to, but his actions are saying he doesn't really care anymore. Should the board move to oust him? What do you all think?
