How to step-down? No one wants to take over.

I was going to say the same thing pretty much. You need to make them aware that this is the end and if someone doesnt step up to the plate then thats it. I'm sure someone will thats how I got to be pres. Eliminate a few things here and there and then they will realize that you mean business.
Also start approaching people who you think might be good at the job. I had someone ask me if being pres was something I would like and thought I would be good at that sort of sealed the deal for me was that someone thought I would be good at it. That also lets people know your not interested anymore if your asking others.

Good Luck

Cindy

Somebody, probably a few somebodys WILL step up to take over, eventually. But first they have to really understand that YOU ARE NOT going to continue to do it. Which means canceling a few things right off the bat. Do you send out a newsletter? If you do, send out one right away and let everyone know what is planned and being canceled this year because there is no one to run the PTO.

It sounds harsh, but the parents are so used to you doing it all, that they think you will continue. I know, because I am stepping away because I just took the job as school librarian and will not have the time to run it all. At this point we are canceling the fall carnival and maybe the book fairs, and innisbrook fundraiser. I have faith that someone will step up because the parents at our school all see the benefits of these activities, or at least they will miss them if they don't happen.

We canceled the fall carnival a few years ago due to lack to parent participation (they all wanted to come to the event but no one wanted to work at it). The next year we had 2 dozen parents show up at the first meeting to find out what they could do to help make it happen.

Just so you know, it is killing me not to plan these events, but I just can't do it all this year.

Good luck and stick to your guns about not doing what you really don't want to do or just can't do this year.

I have served as our Parent Group President for over 3 years now and it has been a great experience for both our school, myself and my kids.

BUT... I'm ready for a change of pace and need to step back from the top level of responsibilty, give my homelife and business more of my attention.

I was appointed and each year the Principal asks me to stay, the volunteers ask me to stay. ( We don't have elections per say, folks who are interested either are appointed or ask for positions - some positions we have an informal vote during a meeting to approve as a group )

The problem is... I announced last May that I was ready to step down and encouraged others to step up, offered to support them if needed.

No one wants to do it! :( I'm stuck unless I just let 'nature take it's course' and step down without someone else committed. Some of the top volunteers say they will quit too if I leave!

What to do? All advice is appreciated.
