We recently made emergency packs for each classroom. We chose clear backpacks so that the contents can be easily found. The backpacks include: flashlights, safety vests for teachers(so they can stand out to students), first aid kits,a whistle, sunscreen lotion(we are in South Texas), a tarp(in case students need to sit down ), notepads and pens for teachers, and emergency cards for each student(for parent contact numbers. They are very useful as teachers have now started to carry them on field trips.
We just put them together this year. Hoping never to have to use them. But recently there was an emergency at one of our other schools that made us think twice. We have nylon bags with flashlights, big enough that teacher's can put their emerg. plan books in. They hang in each classroom by the emerg. exit doors. We also have camping lanterns at the end of each hallway in the event of a black out. We are considering purchasing those ponchos that retain heat in the event the children cannot access their coats.
