Website : Pros and Cons?

Our PTO has a website of our own. The biggest problem is finding someone every year or two to manage it. Not many people understand how to do it and it takes some training to get the hang of it. Then you have to get the right person that will actually keep it up to date. It is a great tool though. We keep our calendar, volunteer info, explanation of activities, board member contact. We do not put up photos of kids or names of kids. Our principal made us right a disclaimer on our site explaining that the school is not a part of our site for "legal reasons." The parents can sign up to receive emails from us and then we put them in our mass email to send out reminders for events, volunteers, etc.

Last year was my first year being PTO President (of course this will be my second, since I got voted back in). I started a website for our PTO last year in about March. It's been slow in taking off I think just because it's something new. I personally love it. It's seperate from the school website because I wanted the flexiblilty to be able to update and change information whenever I wanted to. When I make a change I just sent the Principal an email just to let her know. Here is my link to my PTO"s website www.orgsites.com/ma/vetsparkpto/
(and best yet is that it's free).
If you have any other questions feel free to email me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Website : Pros and Cons? was created by Nickels
Hi all

I am Secretary for our PTO this year, and I have created a "prototype" website for our use. Our school has their own website, and we have one page on that, but are unable to access/change it, so I would like us to have a 'stand alone' site that we can change and utilise as we wish (without offending the Principal, of course!).

My ideas are being greeted with some hesitation from the other PTO officers, who seem worried about the legalities, etc of my idea, and have asked me to research other PTOs and gather some feedback from those who have their own sites.

So, if your PTO does have it's own website, could you please share what you see as being the "Pros and Cons" of it??

Many thanks, Nic
